Ontario Expands Pharmacist Scope to Treat More Conditions and Vaccines

The government of Ontario announced an expansion of the scope of practice for pharmacists in Toronto on May 11, 2026, to increase the availability of healthcare services across the province.

Expanded Prescribing and Vaccination Authority

Under the new guidelines, pharmacists are now authorized to assess and prescribe for nine additional common ailments. This shift is designed to provide residents with more convenient access to treatment for frequent health issues.

The province is also expanding the types of vaccines that pharmacists can administer. Pharmacists may now provide additional publicly funded vaccines that protect against six diseases.

Goals for the Healthcare System

The government stated that the expansion is intended to protect the provincial health-care system by distributing the delivery of care. The initiative aims to provide more connected and convenient care to people throughout Ontario.
