Ontario pharmacists will receive expanded authority to treat additional common ailments and administer a wider range of vaccines starting in July 2026.
The expansion of the pharmacists’ scope of practice was announced by Health Minister Sylvia Jones on May 11, 2026. The provincial government intends for this move to provide residents with faster access to medical care while simultaneously reducing the strain on primary care providers and emergency departments.
Expanded vaccination authority
A significant component of the new regulations involves increasing the number of immunizations that pharmacists are permitted to provide. Starting in July 2026, pharmacists in the province will be authorized to administer vaccinations for several specific conditions, including:
- Tetanus
- Whooping cough
- Diphtheria
- Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)
- Shingles
- Pneumococcal disease
Ailment assessment and treatment
In addition to expanded vaccination capabilities, the Ford government is increasing the number of health conditions that pharmacists can assess and treat directly. Currently, pharmacists in Ontario are authorized to manage 19 common ailments.
The province is now planning to add nine more conditions to this list. Among the new ailments included in this expansion are:
- Head lice
- Nasal congestion
- Ringworm
- Warts
Healthcare system impact
The expansion is part of an ongoing effort to evolve the scope of practice for healthcare professionals in Ontario. By delegating more routine health services to pharmacists, the government aims to create more efficient pathways for patient care and help alleviate the workload currently managed by doctors and hospital staff.

Minister Jones indicated that these changes are part of the government’s continuing efforts to expand the roles of healthcare providers to better serve the province’s needs.
Future expansion plans
The expansion of pharmacist responsibilities is expected to continue beyond the summer of 2026. The provincial government has indicated that there are plans to add five additional ailments to the list of conditions that pharmacists are permitted to treat in early 2027.
