OpenAI has launched an integration for ChatGPT within Apple CarPlay, enabling users to engage in hands-free voice conversations while driving. The feature was rolled out on April 2, 2026, and is available globally across all ChatGPT subscription plans.

To access the service, users require an iPhone running iOS 26.4 or later and the most recent version of the ChatGPT application. The integration is designed to be voice-first, allowing drivers to start new conversations or ask questions directly from the vehicle dashboard.

Technical Requirements and Apple Framework

The availability of ChatGPT on CarPlay follows a policy change by Apple, which began allowing third-party voice-based conversational applications to interface with CarPlay in iOS 26.4. To implement this functionality, applications must obtain a special entitlement from Apple.

Apple has imposed strict design requirements to minimize driver distraction. For any app utilizing this integration, voice must be the primary method of interaction. Apple mandates that chatbot applications must not display text or imagery in response to user queries.

Developers are required to use a standardized voice control template provided by Apple. This interface requires the app to display a specific voice control screen while services are active and limits the application to a maximum of four action buttons.

Operational Limitations

While the integration allows for complex back-and-forth discussions, it does not provide system-level control. ChatGPT is unable to control iPhone functions or vehicle settings.

The service also lacks a dedicated wake word. To initiate a conversation, users must manually open the ChatGPT app from the CarPlay screen.
