OpenAI Stargate Data Centers: Oracle & SoftBank Partnership
OpenAI Expands AI infrastructure with Five New Data Centers
OpenAI is substantially expanding its data center capacity through its Stargate project, announcing plans on September 23, 2025, to build five new AI-focused facilities across the United States. These additions will bring Stargate’s total planned capacity to seven gigawatts, a considerable amount of power capable of supplying over five million homes.
Strategic Partnerships Drive Expansion
The expansion is being realized through strategic partnerships with technology giants Oracle and SoftBank. oracle will develop three sites located in Shackelford County, Texas; Doña Ana County, New Mexico; and a currently undisclosed location in the Midwestern United States.SoftBank is contributing two additional data centers, one in Lordstown,Ohio, and another in Milam County,Texas.
Fueling the Next Generation of AI
This massive infrastructure buildout is directly tied to OpenAI’s ongoing efforts to train and deploy increasingly sophisticated artificial intelligence models. The demand for computational power continues to grow exponentially as AI models become larger and more complex. To support this, openai announced a $100 billion investment from Nvidia on September 22, 2025, earmarked for the purchase of advanced AI processors and further data center progress, as reported by techcrunch.
The investment from Nvidia underscores the critical role specialized hardware plays in advancing AI capabilities and highlights the collaborative nature of innovation in this rapidly evolving field.
