OpenWrt Announces Advancement of OpenWrt Two Router
For two decades, the openwrt project has provided open-source firmware for a variety of networking devices from manufacturers like TP-Link and Asus. Following the release of their first hardware product, the Wi-Fi One, designed for versatile applications, OpenWrt developers have approved plans for a second device: the OpenWrt Two.
While the initial OpenWrt One aimed for a $100 price point, the OpenWrt Two is projected to cost around $250. The device is anticipated to be available before the end of 2025. Production will be handled by gl.inet, succeeding banana Pi, which manufactured the first model.
The openwrt Two will be based on the MediaTek MT7988 chip, supporting wi-Fi 7 with a potential throughput of up to 36 GB/s. It is expected to support 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz bands. Connectivity options include one SFP port (10 GB/s), one 5 GB/s Ethernet port, and four 2.5 GB/s Ethernet ports, along with either one or two 1 GB/s ports. Detailed specifications are not yet available. The first-generation device featured a modular design with several expansion ports and slots, including an M.2 slot for SSD storage.
