Budget 2027 faced immediate backlash in the Dáil on Wednesday as opposition leaders criticized the coalition’s €8.5 billion spending package. Labour leader Ivana Bacik dismissed the measures as a KitKat budget from a TikTok Tánaiste while Social Democrats deputy leader Cian O’Callaghan accused Taoiseach Micheál Martin of breaking election promises to pensioners.

Opposition Leaders Target Pension Allocations and Spending Package

The Dáil clash began during Leaders’ Questions at noon on Wednesday, just a day after the Government unveiled its record public spending package. Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald bypassed the budget initially to question the Taoiseach about the Garvaghy Road standoff in Portadown. However, the Social Democrats and Labour Party quickly pressed the Coalition on the fiscal details.

Ivana Bacik: Budget Fails Struggling Households, Says Labour

Cian O’Callaghan held up a printed copy of Fianna Fáil’s general election manifesto, accusing the party of abandoning older people. The Dublin Bay North TD argued that the €3 increase in the living alone allowance would not buy a cup of tea in a cafe or a pound of butter in a supermarket.

You don’t care about the economy. You don’t care what creates the resources that we need to allocate to social protection. An increase in the social protection budget of €2 billion is quite substantial. The €10 pension increase is above the rate of inflation.

Ivana Bacik Delivers KitKat Budget Criticism Against Coalition

Labour leader Ivana Bacik delivered some of the sharpest remarks of the afternoon session regarding the financial support offered to households. Bacik characterized the plan as underwhelming and failing many citizens.

Budget 2027 Sparks FIERCE Dáil Backlash as Government Accused of Leaving Workers Shortchanged

You might call it a pathetic fallacy that it was pouring rain as your plans were revealed, Bacik told the chamber. In truth, that adjective fits quite well on multiple fronts, seeing as the funds you claim are heading back to citizens would genuinely struggle to pay for a single chocolate bar weekly. It’s a sort of KitKat budget from a TikTok Tánaiste.

The remark drew amusement from Labour benches and prompted Colm Brophy, Minister of State at the Department of Justice, to ask if she worked that up herself. Bacik also criticized the allocation regarding Patrick O’Donovan, stating that the Government had ended up pleasing nobody in seeking to please everybody.

Micheál Martin Defends Financial Strategy and Housing Delivery

Responding to the criticism, Taoiseach Micheál Martin defended the Coalition’s financial strategy and insisted that his party supports older citizens. Martin maintained that the social protection budget increase of €2 billion is substantial and that the €10 pension rise exceeds the current rate of inflation.

Addressing Ivana Bacik’s comments about the weather, Martin joked with a grin whether she was blaming the Government for the rain. He emphasized that the budget cannot be examined in isolation and pointed to a sea change in social housing delivery since 2020.

Martin noted that a series of five budgets will be rolled out rather than just a single one, meaning no single package can be viewed in isolation.
