Tamil Nadu Braces for Heavy Rains as Low-Pressure System Forms
Chennai, Tamil Nadu – A low-pressure area is expected to form over the southeast Bay of Bengal on Monday, December 16, bringing the threat of heavy rainfall to Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert, warning of very heavy rain in four districts on Tuesday.
The IMD predicts that the low-pressure system,fueled by prevailing atmospheric circulation in the South Andaman Sea,will strengthen and move towards Tamil Nadu in a west-northwesterly direction over the next two days.
Moderate rain is expected across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on Monday.However, the heaviest downpours are anticipated on Tuesday, with Nagapattinam, Thiruvarur, Mayiladuthurai, and Cuddalore districts facing the brunt of the storm.
“We are expecting very heavy rainfall in these four districts on tuesday,” said an IMD spokesperson. ”residents should take necessary precautions and stay informed about weather updates.”
The IMD has also issued a warning for heavy rain in Thanjavur,Ariyalur,Perambalur,Pudukkottai,Tiruchirappalli,Kallakurichi,Villupuram,Chengalpattu districts,and Puducherry.
By Wednesday, the heaviest rainfall is expected to shift to Cuddalore, villupuram, and Puducherry. Isolated areas of Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Thiruvarur, Kallakurichi, Tiruvannamalai, Ranipet, Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu districts, and Karaikal could also experience heavy downpours.
Chennai residents can expect cloudy skies with a possibility of light rain in some areas.The IMD has advised fishermen to avoid venturing into the coastal areas of southern Tamil Nadu, the Gulf of Mannar, and the Kumarikadal areas due to strong winds expected to reach up to 55 kilometers per hour.
