We were fortunate to speak with Dr. Emily Carter, a sociologist and this year’s recipient of the Order of Canada for her groundbreaking work on social inclusion.
ND: Dr. Carter, congratulations on this prestigious recognition. Can you tell us a little bit about what this award means to you?
Dr. Carter: It’s an unbelievable honor to be named to the Order of Canada. For me,it signifies the importance of dedicating one’s life to understanding and addressing social inequalities. It’s a validation of the years of research, advocacy, and community engagement that have gone into my work.
ND: Your work focuses on social inclusion. Why is this such a critical issue,in your opinion?
Dr. Carter: Social inclusion is the foundation of a just and thriving society. When everyone feels valued, respected, and has the opportunity to participate fully, everyone benefits.Conversely, exclusion based on factors like race, gender, or socioeconomic status creates deep divisions and hinders our collective progress.
ND: What do you hope to achieve through your continued work?
Dr. Carter: My goal is to continue pushing for policies and practices that promote genuine inclusion. This includes dismantling systemic barriers, challenging prejudice, and creating spaces where everyone feels a sense of belonging. I believe that together, we can build a Canada that truly lives up to its ideals of equality and opportunity for all.
ND: Congratulations again, Dr. Carter. Thank you for your time and your inspiring work.
