San Diego State Defeats Oregon State in Campbell/Cartier Classic Finale
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Oregon State softball team fell to San Diego State 10-5 on Sunday in the final game of the 2026 Campbell/Cartier Classic, concluding their weekend in Southern California.
Despite a strong offensive showing that included multiple home runs, the Beavers were unable to overcome a seven-run fifth inning by the Aztecs. Jaeya Butler led the Oregon State attack, hitting two home runs and driving in three runs. Her performance brings her season total to seven, matching her entire home run count from the 2025 season. It also marked her second multi-homer game of the year.
Tristian Thompson and Morgan Howey also contributed with two hits apiece, each launching a home run. Howey’s home run gave Oregon State a brief lead in the fourth inning, while Thompson went back-to-back with Butler in the seventh. Thompson, who led the team with 10 home runs in 2025, has now hit two home runs in her last three appearances. Howey’s multi-hit game raised her batting average to .406, the second-highest on the team.
Rylei Trujillo started as the designated player, making her eighth appearance of the season and recording one hit. Pitching duties were shared by Kimberlee Aleman, Bailey Murray and Amelia Streuber, who combined to throw 123 pitches.
Oregon State initially took the lead in the third inning after Butler’s two-run home run leveled the score at two. They regained the advantage in the fourth inning with Howey’s solo shot. However, San Diego State responded by tying the game in the fourth and then erupted for seven runs in the fifth, building a commanding lead that proved insurmountable.
Despite the late rally fueled by Butler and Thompson’s consecutive home runs in the seventh, Oregon State couldn’t close the gap, and the game concluded with a final score of 10-5.
The Beavers will return to action next week in California, participating in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Palm Springs, where they are scheduled to play six games over four days.
