The Austrian public broadcaster ORF has launched a unified digital radio platform offering live and on-demand access to all of its publicly funded radio stations across Austria, including regional services such as Radio Tirol, in a move to modernize national audio broadcasting and improve accessibility for listeners nationwide.
The new platform, introduced in April 2026, aggregates ORF’s national and regional radio stations—including Ö1, Ö3, FM4, and regional channels like Radio Tirol, Radio Wien, and Radio Kärnten—into a single digital interface. Users can stream live broadcasts or access up to seven days of on-demand content through the ORF website and affiliated apps, marking a significant step in the broadcaster’s digital transformation strategy.
According to ORF officials, the platform was developed to address growing listener demand for flexible, cross-device access to public service radio content. “We want to ensure that everyone in Austria, regardless of location or device, can easily access the full range of ORF’s radio offerings,” said an ORF spokesperson in a statement released alongside the launch. The service supports streaming via web browsers, iOS and Android applications, and smart TV platforms.
The initiative aligns with broader European public service media efforts to consolidate digital offerings amid declining traditional broadcast audiences and increasing competition from streaming platforms. ORF, which is funded by the Austrian television and radio licence fee (GIS), emphasized that the platform remains free to use and adheres to its public service mandate of providing informative, cultural, and educational content.
Radio Tirol, one of ORF’s nine regional stations, highlighted the platform’s benefit for local audiences, particularly in promoting regional music, news, and cultural programming. The station’s Saturday night show “Viva Las Vegas,” which features rock and roll and pop hits from the 1950s to the present, is now available for live streaming and on-demand replay through the new service, expanding its reach beyond traditional FM broadcast in Tyrol.
ORF stated that the platform incorporates adaptive streaming technology to ensure stable playback across varying internet connections and includes accessibility features such as simplified navigation and compatibility with screen readers. The broadcaster also confirmed that no personal data is collected for streaming usage, in compliance with Austria’s data protection regulations and GDPR.
As part of its long-term media strategy, ORF plans to integrate podcasts and exclusive digital-only content into the platform by the end of 2026. The corporation also indicated that This proves exploring partnerships with other European public broadcasters to potentially share technological infrastructure and content distribution models in the future.
The launch comes at a time when radio remains a trusted medium in Austria, with recent surveys indicating that over 70% of the population tunes in to radio at least once a week. ORF’s digital radio platform aims to reinforce public service radio’s relevance in a converged media landscape while ensuring equitable access to culturally and linguistically diverse regional programming.
