If I could bottling that feeling and doing to everyone…”
he added that he didn’t fully grasp the magnitude of the project at the time. “I think we could never know, I don’t think any of us really knew what we were getting into,” Bloom confessed.
Bloom was joined at the Awesome Con panel by fellow ‘Lord of the Rings’ actors Liv Tyler (Arwen), Sean Astin (Samwise Gamgee), and John Rhys-davies (Gimli). Tyler, 47, echoed Bloom’s sentiments, describing the experience as “so exciting and terrifying for the mere fact of being part of that world and the immensity of the material” created by author J.R.R. “I felt a lot of responsibility and I still feel it. I get nervous when I talk about this. There was a lot to learn,” Tyler said.
Tyler noted that her character, Arwen, was “a beautiful and a bit mysterious character, because there is not much of her” in the books. “We were thinking about how to communicate with her for the movies and create her story, which took some turns over the years.I think that today I am amazed and inspired by her,” she said. “We were very young. It was difficult to understand everything while it happened.”
Rhys-Davies, 80, joked that he didn’t share the same nervousness as his younger co-stars. He recounted a moment where Tyler’s on-screen confidence belied her real-life fears. ”The woman, the fierce character who performed, so beautiful, so safe … would never imagine that it was a young actress who was …”, Rhys-Davies began.
“With fear of riding on horseback?” Tyler interjected.
“It was very afraid of riding a horse,” she added with a laugh.
“It was not noticeable,” Rhys-Davies replied.
Astin, 54, shared a lighter memory of Tyler’s arrival on set. “When Liv arrived, we all had dinner. I remember that for months we had only been men,” Astin said. “And then Liv arrived, for dinner, and we all started: ‘I’m going to sit next to him, no, I’m going to sit next to him!'”
