The czech documentary “I Am Not Yet Who I Want To Be,” directed by Klára Tasovska, is mounting a campaign for an Oscar nomination, navigating both critical acclaim and recent controversy. The film, an intimate portrait of a young woman’s journey, has garnered international festival attention, but faces an uphill battle in the highly competitive Oscar race.
Director and Team defend Film Against Criticism
Ondřej Provazník, director and choirmaster, passionately defends the film and its creators. “‘I am not yet who I want to be’ is certainly a great, original film with meaningful participation in international festivals and deserves a nomination, and I personally know its creators and cheer them on,” he states.
Provazník addresses recent criticism leveled against the film, notably regarding the Czech Film and Television Academy (CFTA) advice process. He clarifies that the team did not solicit the CFTA’s endorsement and were simply pleased to have their film considered. He also dismisses accusations of unethical behavior from a fellow producer as “manipulative,one-sided text full of misleading claims,” emphasizing the sensitivity of the topic and the limited avenues for response.
“I filmed ‘The Choirmaster’ for various reasons, but certainly not because of the Oscar nomination,” Provazník asserts. “The experience itself is invaluable – something no price or nomination can replace.”
Outsider’s Story and Oscar Campaign Strategy
the film crew is now focused on securing a spot on the shortlist for the Oscar for Best International Feature Film, to be announced on December 16, 2025, with the final nominations revealed on January 22, 2026.
Producer kokeš acknowledges the challenge, describing the initial reaction to the nomination process as a “shock.” He believes the film’s chances are comparable to those of previous Czech submissions like “The Choirmaster” or “Caravan.” Kokeš plans to collaborate with Libuše Jarcovjáková to expand the film’s reach and build a dedicated fanbase internationally.
A key component of the campaign is the partnership with US distributor Grasshopper Film, described by Kokeš as “an established New York society” that will provide crucial visibility. They are also working with Square Eyes to further amplify the film’s international presence. Currently, the film is available for streaming on Netflix in the Czech Republic.
A Dual-Category Strategy
The team is exploring a unique strategy: possibly targeting both the International Feature film and the Documentary Feature Film categories. Kokeš points out that documentaries have historically had success with Academy voters, and if the film doesn’t gain sufficient traction in the fiction category, they will focus their efforts on appealing to the documentary electorate.
Kokeš believes “I Am Not Yet Who I Want to Be” may be better positioned than last year’s Czech submission, noting that previous films lacked the depth needed to resonate with Academy voters. He acknowledges the intense competition within the fiction film category, emphasizing the importance of recognition from major festivals.
Ultimately, Kokeš views the film’s narrative as an “outsider story” – a theme that could resonate with voters. “Whether we take our heroine or even a film, gets to the centre. and it proves that everything is absolutely possible.”
