He began his career in the editorial department,honing his craft on a variety of projects that would become classics. His early work included contributions to films such as The Landlord, Harold and Maude, The Last of Sheila, The Nickel Ride, Shampoo, and Bound for Glory.

After assisting on Ashby’s beloved 1971 film Harold and Maude, Zimmerman reunited with the director for the impactful 1978 drama Coming Home.
