Piastri’s Evolving F1 Role: Performance Surge Gives McLaren an Edge
Updated May 30, 2025
Oscar Piastri’s role within Formula 1 is rapidly evolving, marked by a notable leap in performance. His ability to seize opportunities with precision is turning heads. Rather then forcing moves, Piastri waits for the opportune moment to strike, a trait that has become a hallmark of his driving style.
Piastri emphasized the importance of commitment in racing. “I learned pretty early on in my career that normally when you do things half-heartedly in a race car, that’s normally when things go wrong,” Piastri said. He added that fully committing to overtakes is the best way to avoid trouble, a lesson learned in his karting days.
While Piastri’s racing skills were evident from the start, his outright performance has seen considerable betterment this season. Last year, Lando Norris was McLaren’s clear lead driver.Piastri only out-qualified Norris four times, with an average lap-time deficit of 0.147 seconds. This season, however, Piastri leads 6-3 in qualifying sessions, boasting an average time advantage of 0.146 seconds.
this improved qualifying performance has contributed to Piastri’s four wins, compared to Verstappen’s two and Norris’ one. When asked about the turnaround, Piastri credited teamwork. “The team’s done a great job with the car,” Piastri said. “And the team’s also done a great job with myself. We’ve found gains in every area.”
Piastri noted that a key area of focus has been improving qualifying pace. He said the team has been “trying to just find the last couple of hundredths (of a second) in every category you can. And thay all add up.” He also acknowledged Norris’ speed, using his teammate as a reference point. Piastri believes he is now better at “tieing it together,” focusing on technical aspects like braking and steering.
What’s next
Piastri aims to maintain his upward trajectory, focusing on consistency and further refining his technical skills to solidify his role as a top contender in Formula 1. The McLaren team will continue to support his growth, seeking marginal gains in all areas to maximize performance.
