Oslo Plans Memorial for Pride Attack: Grief, Reflection, resistance
updated June 25, 2025
The Norwegian government will create a memorial to honor the victims of the 2022 Oslo shooting, an attack that killed two and injured 21 during Oslo Pride. The Oslo Pride attack was perpetrated by Zaniar Matapour, an Islamic extremist.
Culture Minister Lubna Jaffery announced the plans on June 25, the anniversary of the attack. The government has allocated 5 million kroner and tasked Koro, Norway’s public art association, with commissioning the memorial. The Oslo shooting memorial will serve as a place for collective grief, reflection and resistance.
The proclamation coincided with Oslo Pride week. Dan Bjørke, leader of Oslo Pride, welcomed the memorial plans. He hopes it will remind people of the ongoing struggle for queer rights.
Jaffery told NRK that Rosenkrantz gate, where much of the shooting occurred, would be a natural location for the memorial. The Oslo shooting targeted the London Pub,a popular gay bar,on June 25,the eve of the Oslo pride march.
Matapour was convicted of terrorism offenses in July 2024 and received a 30-year prison sentence, the maximum under Norwegian law. The Oslo memorial will ensure conversations about June 25 continue, according to Jaffery.
“The memorial site to June 25th should be a place of collective grief, reflection and resistance,” Jaffery said. “Through a living memorial, we will ensure that the conversations about June 25th continue into the future.”
“I hope it can be a place that reminds us of the struggle and the debate we must have about the living conditions of queer people,” Bjørke said. “The fact that we can then have a memorial that can show and remind us of the terrible attack is very important.”
