A summer Tradition Continues
for teh sixth consecutive year, the orchestre de la Suisse Romande (OSR) will transform the lawn at Geneva-Plage into a vibrant outdoor concert venue this August. From August 21st to 23rd, music lovers can enjoy a diverse program ranging from classical masterpieces to a live-to-screen musical and a tribute to the legendary Frank Sinatra.
Classical Beginnings with Conunova
the festival kicks off on Thursday,August 21st,with a classical concert led by conductor Giuseppe Mengoli. Featured violinist Alexandra Conunova will join the OSR for a program showcasing works rarely performed by the orchestra. Audiences can anticipate pieces like Louise Farrenc’s ”Opening No. 1 in E minor Op. 23,” Emilie Mayer’s “Symphony No. 7 in F Minor,” Jules Massenet‘s beloved “Thaïs Meditation,” and Franz Waxman’s captivating arrangements based on Georges Bizet’s “Carmen.”
Conunova emphasizes the unique connection with nature that outdoor performances offer, stating, “Outside, we are really in immersion with nature, we are freer, we let the mind escape and unite with music.” She also playfully acknowledges the challenges, from unpredictable winds affecting bows to battling humidity and the occasional insect.
An American in Paris: A Cinematic experience
friday, august 22nd, brings a beloved tradition to the festival: a movie concert. Following the success of “Singin’ in the Rain” in 2024, the OSR will accompany a screening of Vincente Minnelli’s iconic 1951 musical, An American in Paris
. Under the direction of Ernst Van Tiel, the orchestra will perform George Gershwin’s score live, synchronized with the film projected on a screen.The film will be presented in its original language with French subtitles.
Sinatra Under the stars
The festival culminates on Saturday, August 23rd, with a jazzy tribute to Frank Sinatra. Canadian singer Matt Dusk will take the stage with the OSR Jazz Band for a performance entitled “Sinatra under the stars,” promising an evening of classic tunes evoking the glamour of Las Vegas and the charm of Geneva-Plage.
