Jelena Ostapenko Apologizes for US Open Comments to Taylor Townsend
Latvian tennis player Jelena Ostapenko has apologized for her behavior and comments directed towards Taylor Townsend following thier second-round match at the US Open. The incident occurred after Townsend defeated Ostapenko at Flushing Meadows, prompting a heated reaction from Ostapenko, who repeatedly jabbed her finger at Townsend and made disparaging remarks.
According to RTÉ Sport, Ostapenko was angered by Townsend’s perceived lack of apology for a net cord during the match. However, her subsequent language, specifically accusations regarding Townsend’s “education” and “class,” sparked accusations of racism.
Initially, Ostapenko declined to address the media directly but issued a statement on social media denying racist intent while defending her actions. She later elaborated on her apology via Instagram.
In her Instagram statement, Ostapenko explained, “I wanted to apologise for some of the things I said during my second-round singles match. English is not my native language so when I said education, I was speaking only about what I believe as tennis etiquette, but I understand how the words I used could have offended many peopel beyond the tennis court.” She concluded by expressing her appreciation for the support she received and her intention to return to the US Open next year.
Townsend, who has become a focal point of attention during the tournament, channeled the controversy into a strong performance, securing a surprising third-round victory over fifth-seeded Mirra Andreeva.
