Stuttgart, Germany – Jelena Ostapenko secured her place in the WTA Stuttgart semifinals on April 19, 2025, by defeating world No. 1 Iga Świątek in straight sets, marking her second victory over the Polish star in as many meetings this clay-court season.

The Latvian eighth seed prevailed 6-4, 6-3 in a hard-fought contest that lasted one hour and 42 minutes, breaking Świątek’s serve three times and saving all three break points she faced. Ostapenko’s aggressive baseline play and powerful forehand proved decisive, particularly in the second set where she broke Świątek twice to open a 4-0 lead before closing out the match.

This victory extends Ostapenko’s head-to-head advantage over Świątek to 2-0 in 2025, following their earlier encounter in Stuttgart last year where the Latvian also emerged victorious. The win also avenges her only loss to the world No. 1 on clay, which came in the 2023 French Open quarterfinals.

Ostapenko’s performance continued her strong spring clay-court form, having reached the quarterfinals in Madrid and the fourth round in Rome prior to Stuttgart. Her ability to dictate play from the baseline and generate winners off both wings has been a hallmark of her recent success on the red dirt.

Świątek, meanwhile, acknowledged the challenge posed by Ostapenko’s game but remained confident in her overall trajectory. “She played really well, especially with her forehand,” Świątek said in her post-match press conference. “I had chances but didn’t take them. I’ll keep working – this is part of the process.”

In the other quarterfinal match earlier that day, Elena Rybakina advanced to the semifinals with a dominant 6-2, 6-1 victory over Karolina Muchova. The Kazakhstani fourth seed dropped only three games, showcasing her serve-and-volley efficiency and return dominance to set up a semifinal clash with Ostapenko.

Muchova, who had reached the final in Stuttgart in 2023, struggled with her rhythm and unforced errors against Rybakina’s relentless pace. The Czech player committed 24 unforced errors compared to Rybakina’s eight, highlighting the disparity in control throughout the match.

Ostapenko’s semifinal berth sets up a highly anticipated meeting with Rybakina, who is seeking her second Stuttgart title after winning in 2023. The Latvian has never defeated Rybakina in their four previous encounters, all of which have come on hard courts. Their head-to-head record stands at 4-0 in favor of the Kazakhstani player.

The winner of that semifinal will face either Jasmine Paolini or Beatriz Haddad Maia in the final, depending on the outcome of the other semifinal match scheduled for later in the day.

Ostapenko’s run to the semifinals reinforces her status as one of the most dangerous players on clay when her game is firing. With a career-high ranking of No. 5 and a Grand Slam title at the 2017 French Open, she continues to be a threat to the top players on any surface when she can minimize unforced errors and maximize her offensive potential.

The Porsche Tennis Grand Prix, as the WTA Stuttgart event is officially known, remains a premier clay-court tune-up ahead of the French Open, drawing elite players seeking to adapt their game to the slower surface. Ostapenko’s success here adds momentum to her campaign as she aims to translate her Stuttgart form into deep runs at Roland Garros in the coming weeks.
