As osteoporosis prevention gains attention in Italy, health experts are emphasizing the importance of early bone health evaluation through specific diagnostic tests, particularly for women approaching or experiencing menopause and older adults at increased risk of fractures.

The Bone Health and Osteoporosis Foundation (BHOF), formerly known as the National Osteoporosis Foundation, continues to provide guidance on osteoporosis prevention and treatment, having first published its Clinician’s Guide in 1999 and regularly updating it to reflect advances in diagnostic technologies and therapies.

According to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS), maintaining bone health involves understanding the role of bones in the body, identifying risk factors for osteoporosis and adopting lifestyle practices that support bone strength, including adequate calcium and vitamin D intake, regular exercise, and fall prevention strategies.

Medical professionals recommend bone mineral density (BMD) testing, commonly performed via dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans, as the standard method for assessing bone health and diagnosing conditions such as osteopenia and osteoporosis. These tests measure the amount of calcium and other minerals in a segment of bone, typically the hip and spine, to estimate bone strength and fracture risk.

Testing is particularly advised for women over age 65, men over age 70, and younger individuals with risk factors such as a history of fractures, long-term steroid use, low body weight, or certain medical conditions affecting bone metabolism. For women, the onset of menopause marks a critical time for evaluation due to the accelerated bone loss that can occur during this period.

In addition to clinical testing, public health initiatives across Italy are promoting bone health awareness through community events. For example, Casa di Cura Piacenza hosted an open day on April 27 focused on osteoporosis prevention, while Casa di Cura San Rossore in Pisa organized two prevention days offering screenings and educational sessions on skeletal fragility and lifestyle interventions.

These efforts align with broader campaigns emphasizing that bone health is not solely a concern for the elderly but should be addressed earlier in life through proper nutrition, weight-bearing exercise, and avoidance of smoking and excessive alcohol consumption. Health authorities stress that while medication may be necessary for those diagnosed with osteoporosis, lifestyle modifications remain foundational to both prevention and management.

Ongoing research and clinical guidelines continue to refine approaches to osteoporosis care, with increasing attention to fracture liaison services, patient education programs like BHOF’s Bone Buddies virtual support group, and interdisciplinary efforts to integrate bone health into routine medical practice, especially in primary care and geriatrics.
