OSU Unveils Boone Pickens Human Performance Innovation Complex: A New Era for Health Research
Celebration Marks Major Milestone for the Human Performance and Nutrition Research Institute
Oklahoma State University (OSU) is naming its new Human Performance Innovation Complex after T. Boone Pickens, a prominent alumnus and philanthropist. This naming honors Pickens’ significant contributions, totaling nearly $650 million to OSU.
In June 2023, the T. Boone Pickens Foundation donated $120 million to OSU. This included a $25 million allocation for the new complex, located north of the Sherman E. Smith Training Center. The complex will support the Human Performance and Nutrition Research Institute (HPNRI).
OSU President Kayse Shrum said, “The $25 million for the innovation complex is a significant step toward creating a world-class research institute on our Stillwater campus.” She added that it aims to improve the health of Oklahomans.
The HPNRI will incorporate research from various OSU colleges, including the College of Education and Human Sciences and the College of Engineering. Its cross-disciplinary approach is vital for its success.
Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt praised Pickens and his legacy. He stated that Pickens emphasized physical fitness’ role in a healthy workforce. Stitt hopes the complex will transform health outcomes for Oklahomans.
Lance Walker, the executive director of HPNRI, appreciated the Pickens Foundation’s support. “Boone Pickens understood the link between productivity, fitness, and happiness,” he noted.
Jay Rosser, Pickens’ public affairs head, emphasized that Pickens would be proud of the complex. He stated Pickens promoted lifelong health and fitness, which enhances productivity.
The Boone Pickens Human Performance Innovation Complex and HPNRI aim to conduct research, train future health professionals, and offer solutions to improve human performance and nutrition.
Oklahoma supported this initiative with $50 million from the American Rescue Plan Act. The complex is also backed by the Pickens Foundation, with fundraising ongoing. Architects are finalizing designs, and construction will start in 2025.
