Otani’s Heroics Seal the Deal: Padres’ Morejon Left to Ponder Fateful Fourth-Pitch Call
National League: Padres 3-4 Dodgers (September 25, 2024 Los Angeles)
The Padres, who are in second place in the National League West, faced the first-place Dodgers in enemy territory on the 25th (26th Japan time). They lost 3–4, increasing their lead to three games and clinching the district championship.
The Padres had won the first battle for first place 4-2 on the 24th (25th), securing a playoff spot for the first time in two years. However, their momentum was stopped by Shohei Otani. Right-handed starting pitcher Dylan Schiess, who had won 14 games this season and was the winning pitcher against the Dodgers on July 31, gave up three runs in five innings.
In the first inning, Otani walked and allowed the leadoff home run, and in the third inning he missed and was out. However, with the score tied 2-2 in the fourth inning, with two outs and runners on first and second base, Otani hit a timely double that hit the right field fence, securing the third goal.
In the 6th inning, with the score tied 3-3, third lefty Adrian Morejon, who was on first and second base with two outs, was hit by a hit to center field from Ohtani, allowing the game to go forward. Morejon said of Ohtani’s timely hitting: “I respect his talent. He’s a good hitter. I was focusing on my offensive plan and striking out.”
Morejon looked back and wondered if it was the double stitching. He answered “Yes” to the question. After driving in one ball and two strikes, the fourth pitch, which reached all the way to the outside corner, was ruled a ball, and the fifth pitch, which floated high, was bounced to center field. “(The fourth shot) was a close call, but the referee made the correct call. There’s nothing you can do about it,” he said.
