Fatal Stabbing in Downtown Ottawa Leads to First-Degree Murder Charge
Ottawa police have charged a 70-year-old man with first-degree murder following a fatal stabbing outside the Rideau Centre shopping mall on Thursday evening. The incident has left residents and a city councillor concerned about safety in the downtown core.
Yves Brisebois, 70, was charged on Friday, February 20, 2026, in connection with the death of a man who was stabbed near Rideau Street and Colonel By Drive around 5:30 p.m. On Thursday, February 19, 2026. First responders transported the victim to hospital in critical condition, but he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival, according to police.
Police have not yet released the identity of the victim as they continue efforts to notify his family. This marks the city’s fourth homicide of 2026.
The stabbing occurred outside an entrance to the Rideau Centre. The incident prompted a response from Ottawa paramedics and a subsequent investigation by the Ottawa Police Service.
The news has sparked concern among residents and local officials. City Councillor Jodie Applewaithe spoke to residents following the incident, addressing their worries about safety in the area. A CBC News report highlighted the concerns expressed by both residents and the councillor.
This incident comes as Ottawa police are also investigating another stabbing that occurred in 2025. A Canada-wide warrant has been issued for Zakarye Abdi-Jama, 19, in connection with the second-degree murder of 21-year-old Raphael Atende. Abdi-Jama is accused of stabbing Atende on Russell Road on October 18, 2025. Atende’s death was Ottawa’s 15th homicide of that year.
Police are currently seeking information regarding Abdi-Jama’s whereabouts and have stated they will share a recent photograph of him on their website and social media channels as soon as one becomes available.
