NORMAN — Oklahoma football has filled its running backs coach vacancy, turning to Deland McCullough, a veteran of both the NFL and college ranks. The Sooners are expected to hire McCullough, formerly of the Las Vegas Raiders, to replace DeMarco Murray, who recently departed for the Kansas City Chiefs.
McCullough brings a wealth of experience to Norman, having coached running backs for 15 years at various levels. Most recently, he mentored Raiders rookie Ashton Jeanty, who enjoyed a standout 2025 season with 975 rushing yards, five touchdowns, 55 receptions, 346 receiving yards, and five receiving touchdowns under McCullough’s guidance.
Prior to his time in the NFL, McCullough served as the running backs coach at Notre Dame for three seasons, where he played a key role in the development of Jeremiyah Love, who is projected to be a top pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. His coaching resume also includes stints at Indiana, USC, and with the Kansas City Chiefs, where he was part of the staff that won Super Bowl LIV.
The hiring of McCullough represents a significant addition to Brent Venables’ coaching staff. He emerged as the top candidate from a field that included DeShaun Foster, Curtis Luper, and Jayden Everett, according to reports. McCullough’s extensive background and proven track record made him a clear choice for the Sooners.
Interestingly, McCullough has strong ties to the Oklahoma program through his sons, linebacker Dasan McCullough and defensive back Daeh McCullough, who both previously played for the Sooners. This existing relationship is believed to have been a factor in Venables’ decision.
McCullough also has a pre-existing relationship with a current OU staff member, Kevin Wilson, having coached under Wilson during his time at Indiana. Wilson is now an analyst for the Sooners.
The Sooners are hoping McCullough can replicate the success he’s had at previous stops, developing a strong running game and mentoring talented backs. He becomes the third position coach hired by Oklahoma this offseason, joining Jason Witten and Lamar Morgan as additions to Venables’ staff.
