Oklahoma City Eye Care Strengthened: OU Health to Acquire Dean McGee Eye Institute
Oklahoma City residents will soon benefit from a more integrated and robust system of eye care. On December 23, OU Health announced a letter of intent to acquire the esteemed Dean McGee Eye Institute (DMEI), also located in Oklahoma City. the acquisition, anticipated to be finalized by January 1, 2025, promises to build upon DMEI’s 50-year legacy of providing specialized vision care.
This isn’t simply a merger; it’s a strategic alignment designed to fortify the future of ophthalmology in the region. DMEI has long served as the Department of Ophthalmology for the University of Oklahoma college of Medicine, and will be formally renamed the dean McGee Department of Ophthalmology, pending approval from the University of Oklahoma Board of Regents. This integration will deepen the connection between clinical practice and academic advancement.
The agreement encompasses DMEI’s full spectrum of clinical operations. OU Health will take ownership of the flagship location on the OU Health campus, and also three satellite clinics serving the Oklahoma City metropolitan area, and a further location in Lawton, Oklahoma. This expanded network will increase access to specialized eye care for a wider population.
Importantly, the future of research and education remains secure. DMEI’s buildings and real estate assets will be transferred to the Dean McGee Eye Institute Foundation. This foundation will continue its vital work in supporting ophthalmology education and groundbreaking research initiatives, ensuring continued innovation in the field.
