Vienna, Austria: The first detailed analysis of unplanned births that occured outside the hospital setting in Austria has shown that, although such deliveries are rare, they pose challenges for emergency teams that attend, especially if babies are born prematurely [1].
Researchers presented their findings at the European Emergency Medicine Congress, revealing that between 2017 and 2024, there were 173 unplanned, out-of-hospital births in the Styria region of Austria.of these, 16 (9%) were premature – defined as less than 37 weeks’ gestation. Challenges Faced by Emergency Teams
Ms. Helena Leonhartsberger, a medical student and research team member, and a volunteer paramedic with the Austrian Red Cross, emphasized the challenges faced by emergency personnel. “Most emergency physicians are not specialized in pediatrics or, more specifically, in neonatology. Even though these scenarios are rare,emergency teams must be adequately trained and prepared to handle them. Moreover, appropriate equipment for treating newborns, particularly premature or critically ill neonates, shoudl be available on all emergency vehicles.”
The study highlighted specific issues encountered during these births:
- In two cases of infant death, no resuscitation was attempted.
- One premature baby underwent triumphant pre-hospital resuscitation and intubation.
- Of the surviving infants,some required bag-mask ventilation or oxygen support.
- Temperature recordings were only available for a minority of infants admitted to hospital (6 out of 13), with a median temperature of 34.8°C.
Personal Motivation and the Genesis of the Study
ms. Leonhartsberger’s research was sparked by a personal experiance during her paramedic training. “I was unprepared for the situation,but fortunately,everything went well,” she explained. “this led me to study pre-hospital deliveries of premature infants, aiming to explore how emergency teams can be better prepared for such high-risk situations and improve outcomes for these vulnerable patients.”
