Nishihara Kakushin Brings Traditional Japanese Music to Paris

Japanese artist Nishihara Kakushin is set to perform in Paris as part of the Festival d’Automne. On November 12, 2024, the singer and biwa player will take the stage at the Japan Cultural Center for two special concerts, offering a unique opportunity to experience the captivating world of musical UFO Nishihara Kakushin.

Nishihara Kakushin is a true Japanese musical UFO, revealed by musician, composer, and producer Ryuichi Sakamoto. As an unparalleled master of the biwa, a traditional Japanese stringed instrument with a history dating back to the 8th century, Nishihara Kakushin’s performances are a testament to her skill and artistry. But what exactly is a biwa? It’s a short-necked lute with a rich history and cultural significance in Japan.

Playing the biwa requires great skill and adherence to traditional rules. The bachi, made of very hard wood, must be held with both hands, producing melodic and rhythmic sounds, as well as playing a percussive role. Traditionally, biwa players wear kimonos and play on their knees, adding to the instrument’s cultural and historical significance.

Nishihara Kakushin is one of the world’s leading biwa players, known for her unique style and captivating performances. Born in Tokyo in 1971, she trained under the famous Kinji Tsuruta and has since become a renowned musician, blending traditional Japanese music with modern influences. Her concerts are truly musical experiences, at times even shamanic, and have been influenced by punk music and other genres.

As part of the Festival d’Automne, Nishihara Kakushin will perform two special concerts at the Japan Cultural Center on November 12, 2024, at 6 pm and 8 pm. Each concert will last for one hour, offering a unique opportunity to experience the beauty and richness of traditional Japanese music. Tickets will go on sale from October 1, 2024.

In addition to Nishihara Kakushin’s performances, the Festival d’Automne will also feature a play directed by Satoko Ichihara, titled “Yoroboshi – The Weakling,” which will be performed at the Théâtre de Gennevilliers.
