The image of an Israeli soldier damaging a statue of Jesus Christ in southern Lebanon has drawn widespread condemnation, including from Israel’s own leaders, sparking a broader conversation about the treatment of religious symbols during military operations.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he was “stunned and saddened” by the photograph, which showed a soldier using what appeared to be an axe or sledgehammer on the statue’s face. He condemned the act in the strongest terms and expressed regret for any hurt caused to believers in Lebanon and around the world.

The Israeli military confirmed the authenticity of the image, stating it showed a soldier operating in southern Lebanon, where Israel had launched a ground invasion the previous month as part of its joint operations with the United States against Iran. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said the incident was being investigated and that appropriate measures would be taken against those involved.

The IDF emphasized that the soldier’s conduct was “wholly inconsistent with the values expected of its troops” and reiterated that its operations in southern Lebanon were focused on dismantling terrorist infrastructure established by Hezbollah, with no intention of harming civilian infrastructure, including religious buildings or symbols.

The photograph, which circulated widely on social media and garnered over five million views on X, also showed the statue turned upside down and off its cross. Palestinian members of the Israeli Knesset, including Ayman Odeh and Ahmad Tibi, criticized the act, with Tibi drawing a connection to recent controversies involving U.S. President Donald Trump and his feud with the leader of the Roman Catholic Church.

The incident has prompted calls for accountability and renewed attention to the protection of religious sites during armed conflict, particularly in regions with diverse religious communities such as southern Lebanon.
