Outrage in Rabi: Community Demands Return of Teacher Found Guilty of Sexual Harassment
Students Demand Return of Suspended Professor Amid Allegations of Sexual Harassment
A group of students from the Department of Psychology at Rajshahi University has raised demands to reinstate Professor Enamul Haque, who was suspended for two years for allegedly sexually harassing a colleague. The students have been protesting since September 8, with a list of 12-point demands for departmental reform, including Haque’s return to academic activities.
Protesting Students’ Demands
- Enamul Haque should be brought back to academic activities within two working days.
- No teacher can threaten any student and interfere with results out of personal opposition.
- Groupism or competition between teachers should be prevented.
- Two teachers, including Professor Mahbooba Kaniz Kaya, should be excluded from the department.
- Written instructions should be given to the teachers to carry out all the educational activities of the department in accordance with the normal procedure.
Allegations of Misuse of Power and Harassment
Imran Hasan, a student of the academic year 2018-19, alleged that Professor Mahbooba Kaniz has misused her political power and her organization Mahila Parishad to threaten students and accuse them of sexual harassment. Another teacher has been accused of calling students “scumbags” and “outsiders” and threatening to tamper with results.
Victimized Teacher Speaks Out
The victimized female teacher alleged that Professor Enamul Haque has been pressuring her to withdraw the sexual harassment complaint, and that efforts have been made to compel her to sign a protest against her will. She stated that the allegations against her are fabricated and that Haque has been punished by the University Syndicate for sexual harassment.
University Vice-Chancellor Responds
The vice-chancellor of the university, Saleh Hasan Naqeeb, stated that there is a complication in the psychology department and that the university is working to resolve the issue. He added that Haque’s return to academic activities is not possible at present, as he is being punished by the syndicate.
Background of the Incident
Professor Enamul Haque was accused of showing indecent gestures and sexually harassing colleagues on May 21 last year. The teacher who was the victim filed a written complaint with the vice-chancellor, leading to Haque’s suspension from academic and administrative activities for two years.
