Two French women have been fined for spreading false information about President Emmanuel Macron’s wife, Brigitte Macron. A Paris criminal court sentenced the women to suspended sentences and a fine of 500 euros (approximately 730,000 won) for defaming Madame Brigitte.
The court also ordered the women to pay 8,000 euros (approximately 11.79 million won) in damages to Brigitte for defamation and 5,000 euros (approximately 7.37 million won) to her brother, Jean-Michel Trogneux.
The women claimed on YouTube in 2021 that “Brigidette does not exist and that her brother, Jean-Michel, pretends to be Brigitte after undergoing gender reassignment surgery.” They also alleged that Madame Brigitte had committed fraud, deception, and national lies against the French people.
The conspiracy theory, which began circulating on social media after President Macron was first elected in 2017, spread worldwide after a YouTube video by the two women went viral.
In response, Mrs. Brigitte filed a lawsuit against the two women in late January 2022.
However, one of the defendants’ attorneys announced his intention to appeal the ruling, stating that it was ”a ruling that violates all laws regarding freedom of the press.”
