Alex Ovechkin will miss 4-6 weeks due to a fractured left fibula, according to the Washington Capitals. The injury occurred during a leg-to-leg collision with Jack McBain of the Utah Hockey Club in the third period of a game on Monday, which the Capitals won 6-2.

This absence will be the longest of Ovechkin’s career. He previously missed six games due to an upper-body injury in November 2009. Throughout his 20 NHL seasons, Ovechkin has missed only 59 games overall, with 35 of those due to injury. He typically misses five or fewer games in a season.

His teammate, Tom Wilson, expressed surprise at Ovechkin’s injury. He noted Ovechkin’s dedication and hard play over his 20-year career, stating, “It’s new to me. He doesn’t go out there and just coast around.” Wilson believes Ovechkin will return stronger.

Ovechkin’s injury halts his pursuit of Wayne Gretzky’s NHL record of 894 goals. He has scored 15 goals this season, raising his career total to 868 and placing him just 27 goals shy of Gretzky’s record. His strong performance this season made him the oldest player to reach 15 goals first.

Avalanche center Nathan MacKinnon remarked on the situation, saying it is unfortunate Ovechkin is sidelined but hopes he can return sooner than expected. The Capitals and fans will closely watch his recovery as he aims to continue his goal-scoring chase.
