French authorities arrested more than 1,300 people on the 24th, as hundreds of thousands of demonstrators joined nationwide protests over soaring living costs and poor school conditions. The demonstrations led to clashes with police in cities including Paris, Marseille, and Bordeaux.

Clashes and Arrests Across French Cities

The French interior ministry estimated that 410,000 people participated in the protests on the 24th, while labor unions put the figure closer to 800,000. Around 70,000 police officers were deployed across the country under strict regulations. In Paris, police used tear gas and water cannons near the end of a march between Porte d’Italie and Porte de Vincennes after protesters built makeshift barricades and threw objects. In Marseille, garbage bins were set on fire, roads were blocked with metal plates, and police vehicles broke through burning barricades. In Lyon, police fired tear gas to disperse crowds gathered in restricted zones.

Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez stated that several thousand radical activists, including about 500 identified rioters, gathered at the rear of the march in Paris. The interior ministry reported that 142 people were arrested in Paris, which was less than half the total recorded on the 17th. Across the country, 53 police officers sustained injuries during the unrest.

Injuries and Property Damage in Urban Centers

Two protesters sustained severe injuries during the demonstrations, according to the interior minister. One injury occurred in Toulouse and the other in Clermont-Ferrand. French media outlet Franceinfo reported that the Toulouse casualty was a 20-year-old male protester who lost several fingers on one hand when an explosive device detonated nearby. In the Bouches-du-Rhône department, which includes Marseille, local authorities confirmed that seven commercial stores suffered looting or property damage.

The latest wave of unrest followed larger demonstrations held between the 17th and the weekend, which drew roughly 550,000 participants over fuel prices and living costs. Those earlier protests resulted in more than 2,500 arrests and direct damage to over 2,000 shops and businesses across France. The French Chamber of Commerce estimated the resulting financial losses at several hundred million euros.

Political Reactions and Broader European Unrest

President Emmanuel Macron announced that only authorized union-backed demonstrations would receive permits, and hundreds of individuals have already faced swift court trials leading to prison sentences for property damage, arson, and looting. Meanwhile, political leaders traded blame for the social tension ahead of the French election scheduled for next spring, when Macron’s term concludes. Polling indicates voters may choose between National Rally candidate Marine Le Pen and France Unbowed leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon. Right-wing figures condemned the rioters, whereas left-wing leaders backed the union-led protests. Mélenchon accused French media of failing to report peaceful protests and claimed that police deliberately created chaos that injured two people.

Similar economic discontent triggered large-scale demonstrations in other European nations on the 24th. In Barcelona, student protests turned violent, resulting in more than 120 arrests. Police in Tirana deployed tear gas against thousands of anti-government protesters, while clashes occurred in Brussels, and security forces in Milan blocked demonstrators from congregating.

Upcoming Elections and Ongoing Social Tension

The demonstrations highlight deep economic and political divisions as France approaches a high-stakes election in the spring of next year. With President Macron finishing his term in May, the country faces a polarized political landscape shaped by living cost pressures and widespread public dissatisfaction.
