SHANKILL, IRELAND – The frantic scramble for affordable housing in Ireland has been thrown into sharp relief after a staggering 4,608 applications were received for just 195 cost-rental apartments at the Shanganagh Castle development in Shankill.
We spoke to housing economist Dr. fiona byrne to better understand the implications of this unprecedented demand. “The sheer volume of applications highlights the dire straits many families find themselves in,” Dr. Byrne stated. “This is not simply about wanting a new apartment; it’s about securing a safe and affordable place to live in a country facing a serious housing crisis.”
With over 2,200 applicants meeting the eligibility criteria, a lottery will be held in the new year to determine who secures a coveted spot in this development.
Dr.Byrne emphasized the precarious situation facing those who missed out. “For those who don’t get lucky in the lottery, the options remain bleak. The private rental market is exorbitantly priced, and social housing waiting lists are years long. This leaves many families with few options, trapped in a cycle of uncertainty and financial stress.”
She lauded the Shanganagh Castle project as a step in the right direction but stressed the need for a more widespread solution. “initiatives like cost-rental housing are crucial, but they are merely a band-aid on a gaping wound. We need a comprehensive national strategy that prioritizes the construction of genuinely affordable housing units to meet the needs of all citizens.”
