Diesel theft is increasing in Baden-Württemberg, with recent reports detailing significant fuel losses in the Ludwigsburg and Rhein-Neckar districts.
In Kreis Ludwigsburg, thieves stole more than 900 liters of diesel within a 24-hour period.
Thefts in Rhein-Neckar-Kreis
A separate series of thefts occurred in the Rhein-Neckar-Kreis, where approximately 900 liters of diesel were stolen from two trucks. According to reports published on April 4, 2026, the thieves took 400 liters from one vehicle and 500 liters from another.
The thefts took place during the night from Thursday to Friday. One truck was targeted in Ladenburg, and the second was parked on the roadside in Sinsheim, located approximately 50 kilometers away.
Methods and Security Failures
Police reported that the perpetrators used a screwdriver to open the fuel tank caps before sucking out the fuel. The use of simple tools to bypass security measures indicates that lockable fuel caps are no longer sufficient to prevent these crimes.
Due to high fuel prices, the diesel stolen in the Rhein-Neckar-Kreis incident is valued at more than 2,000 Euro.
Authorities are currently investigating the unidentified thieves and are working to determine if there is a connection between the thefts in Ladenburg and Sinsheim.
