Overcoming Alcohol Misery: My Journey from Dependence to Freedom
Patrick J. Adams, known for his role on Suits, discussed his battle with alcohol and depression during his last season on the show. He stated that he struggled with his mental health and excessive drinking in season seven, which led to his character, Mike Ross, being written out.
In a podcast interview with Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Adams admitted, “I wasn’t taking good care of my mental health and I was drinking too much.” He described his state as “pretty miserable” and stated that he did not have the right tools to address his depression at the time.
Adams shared that he would numb his feelings to cope with insecurities and fears. He realized these methods were harmful to his relationships and his role as a father. He reached a breaking point and decided to stop drinking, which he regards as one of the best decisions for his life and family.
Reflecting on his time with Suits, Adams noted that financial reasons were the only motivations to stay. Despite thinking about the money earned by his co-star Gabriel Macht, he never regretted leaving, stating it was the right choice for his marriage.
Currently, Adams hosts a podcast titled Sidebar: A Suits Rewatch with former co-star Sarah Rafferty. The show saw a resurgence on Netflix, amassing 57.7 billion minutes of viewership, prompting a spinoff series Suits: LA where Macht will return.
Adams will also star in the upcoming limited series Lockerbie and the Yellowstone sequel, The Madison.
He expressed a mixed reaction to Suits gaining new popularity. Initially, he questioned what this resurgence meant for his career. As the show’s popularity grew, he felt a sense of recognition and gratitude for his time on it. He reflected that he was too focused on performing well during filming to appreciate the experience fully.
Looking back, Adams now feels compassion for himself. He appreciates the amazing cast and crew of Suits and has learned to feel gratitude for those moments. He acknowledged the highs and lows of his experience but is now able to cherish the good memories.
