Overcoming Pain: Strategies for Healing and Resilience
Alec Baldwin expressed his desire to move on from the events surrounding the film Rust, stating it has been the hardest experience of his life. Baldwin spoke after the film premiered at the Camerimage Festival in Poland. The film was created three years after a tragic incident in which a prop gun he was handling killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins in New Mexico.
Earlier this year, a judge dismissed the involuntary manslaughter charges against Baldwin. Recently, he received a lifetime achievement award at the Torino Film Festival in Italy. After a press conference where questions about Rust were not allowed, Baldwin shared with Variety that he has not seen the film’s final cut but hopes for its release.
Baldwin highlighted the impact of the Rust incident on his family, particularly on his wife. He stated, “Beyond the victims themselves, the thing that most pains me is what it did to my wife. My wife has been very, very traumatized from this.” He reflected on their life before the tragedy, mentioning their seven children and the sudden shift in their family dynamics.
Halyna Hutchins’ mother criticized Baldwin for attending the premiere, accusing him of trying to benefit financially from her daughter’s death. Baldwin responded, denying any claims of profiting from the film’s sale and distribution. He emphasized that after Hutchins’ death, mental health professionals advised him against completing the film due to his own distress. Nonetheless, he chose to finish the project and waived his fee to support Hutchins’ husband, who he claimed now fully owns the film.
Baldwin remarked, “It’s been such a tragedy…we would do anything to undo.” He mentioned that the reshoots resulted in a quantitatively better film. He expressed a strong desire to move past the Rust experience, stating, “I want all things Rust to just leave my windshield, so I can go and do other things and be a father to my children.”
At 66 years old, Baldwin seeks to regain energy for his family. He and his wife, Hilaria Baldwin, have seven children under ten years old. In June, they announced their reality series, titled The Baldwins, set to release in 2025. Baldwin’s previous marriage to actress Kim Basinger produced a daughter, Ireland.
