Combating Dangerous Overtaking on Highway 18
The Municipality of Acquappesa, located in the Cosenza province of Italy, has activated a new automated system designed to detect and penalize unauthorized overtaking maneuvers along the SS18 Tyrrhenian highway. The system went live on August 4th, coinciding with a surge in traffic due to the summer holiday season.
This initiative represents a proactive step towards improving road safety on a stretch of highway known for its risks. The system will assess overtaking infractions without requiring the physical presence of law enforcement, supplementing existing “Scout Speed” systems already in place to monitor speed limit violations.
A History of Risk and a Response
According to Mayor Francesco Tripicchio, the chosen location for the new system has a long history of dangerous driving behavior. “It is indeed a point that in both directions it offers motorists temptation for overtaking, but also for reckless outputs from the state road,” he stated. Over the years, numerous traffic violations and accidents, some with severe consequences, have been recorded at this location.
The municipality deliberately delayed implementation to ensure full compliance with evolving legislation. “We could also install it in the previous months,” Tripicchio explained, ”but we waited for the latest updates to the legislation to avoid risks.” the system has received all necessary authorizations from ministerial, prefectural, and Anas (the Italian national agency for road infrastructure) authorities.
How the System Works
The new system utilizes technology to automatically identify vehicles engaged in unauthorized overtaking maneuvers. Details regarding the specific technology employed (e.g., cameras, sensors) were not immediately available, but the system is designed to operate in real-time, issuing citations for violations. This approach aims to deter dangerous driving behavior and improve overall road safety.
