Bending the Rules: An Interview with Overwatch 2’s lead Skin Designer on the Avatar Collab
NewsDirect 3: The Avatar-themed skins are absolutely stunning! Can you tell us a bit about the inspiration behind them and the design process?
Lead Skin Designer: We wanted to capture the essence of each avatar character while staying true to Overwatch 2’s unique aesthetic. For example, Genji as Zuko felt like a natural fit, given their similar backgrounds and mastery of blade combat. We took inspiration from Zuko’s iconic fire Nation armor, incorporating elements like the flame detail on his blade and the signature scar.
NewsDirect 3: There’s a lot of detail in these skins – how did you approach things like special effects?
Lead Skin Designer: With character like tracer as Aang, it was critically important to visually represent airbending. We added subtle animated effects around her model, like wisps of air swirling around her staff, to give that impression of flow and movement. Kiriko as Suki was engaging as we wanted to showcase both her healing abilities and martial prowess,so we incorporated elements like glowing Chi blocking gloves and her Kyoshi Warrior fans.
NewsDirect 3: What has the response from both the Overwatch and Avatar communities been like so far?
Lead Skin Designer: It’s been unbelievable! Seeing fans share screenshots and cosplays based on these skins has been truly rewarding. We’re thrilled that we could bring these two beloved worlds together and give players a new way to express themselves in Overwatch 2.
NewsDirect 3: Any hints about future collaborations or surprises in store for Overwatch 2 players?
Lead Skin Designer: (laughs) We’re always cooking up something exciting at Blizzard. Keep an eye out! We want to continue surprising and delighting players with new content and experiences.
