Blizzard Entertainment is implementing a series of structural updates to legacy characters in Overwatch as part of the Season 2 update. According to the April 10, 2026, Director’s Take: Small Steps, Big Leaps post, the studio is focusing on integrating specific Perks into the base kits of older heroes to ensure they remain competitive alongside newer additions to the roster.

The primary objective of these changes is to provide baseline upgrades that help older heroes keep up with the current game state without overcomplicating their mechanics or forcing long-term players to relearn their characters. Associate game director Alec Dawson stated that the goal is to avoid making kits overly bloated while providing necessary structural help rather than simple numerical adjustments.

Hero Kit Modernization and Baseline Upgrades

For Season 2, Blizzard has selected three specific heroes to receive baseline kit upgrades. These changes involve moving previously optional Perks directly into the heroes’ standard abilities.

  • Mercy will have Flash Heal added to her base kit.
  • Reaper will receive Dire Triggers as a baseline tool.
  • Pharah will have Drift Thrusters integrated into her base kit.

Blizzard indicated that these specific Perks were chosen because they enhance the functionality of established abilities without adding friction or unnecessary complexity to the fast-paced gameplay.

Social Feature Revivals and Quality of Life Changes

Beyond hero balancing, Season 2 introduces the return of several social features designed to improve the post-match experience. Players will see the return of Post-Match Accolades, which will be presented on a new 3D results screen. This interface allows players to vote for an MVP after a match concludes.

Blizzard is also testing a new social interaction feature involving an optional voice-chat lobby. This would allow members of opposing teams to communicate during the Play of the Game reveal, though the company noted that this chat will remain monitored for safety.

the update modifies the map voting system. The changes are intended to give overwhelming lobby majorities more control, making it more likely that the map picked by the majority of players is the one selected for the match.

2026 Roadmap and Future Reworks

While the Season 2 updates focus on baseline kit integration, Blizzard is planning more significant structural changes later in the year. In the April 10 post, the studio mentioned This proves considering larger reworks for a shortlist of heroes, including Sombra, Lifeweaver, and Roadhog.

These larger reworks are described as subject to change and are more likely to be implemented after the conclusion of Season 3. This tiered approach allows the developer to address immediate competitiveness issues through baseline upgrades while planning more comprehensive overhauls for the future.

In Season 2, we’ll be integrating some Perks into Heroes’ base kits to help them keep up with our newer Overwatch (and Talon) recruits.
