Blizzard Entertainment is overhauling Overwatch with a vampire-inspired Support hero named Doctrine, a role shift for Sombra, and a tank rework for Roadhog, according to announcements made during the BlizzCon Opening Ceremony on September 12, 2026. These updates are scheduled to launch on October 6, 2026, alongside the release of a new Escort map called Watchpoint: Grímsvötn, marking the conclusion of the year-long Act III: The Reign of Talon narrative arc.

Doctrine Introduces a Vampire-Inspired Support Kit and Infuse Mechanic

His character model shifts dynamically during matches, transforming from a gaunt appearance into a sleeker form as combat progresses. Players can test the new hero early through a limited Hero Trial running across all platforms until September 14, 2026, ahead of his official debut in October. The hero’s defining feature is the Infuse ability, a right-click modifier that lets players choose when to consume a cooldown to upgrade their next action. Doctrine utilizes the Eternal Scepter as his primary weapon, which heals allies and damages enemies simultaneously within a single attack input, setting him apart from heroes like Moira who require separate hand controls. His Shift ability, Shrouded Momentum, provides a horizontal dash with damage reduction that converts into full three-dimensional free-flight when infused. Additionally, his Invigorating Drones deploy mechanical bat swarms to grant allies attack speed and healing, while his ultimate ability, Deliverance, launches a drone swarm that reduces enemy maximum health. The character’s backstory places him inside Watchpoint: Grímsvötn, a volcanic Icelandic prison featured in the game’s Breakout cinematic trailer. In the narrative, Doomfist coordinates an extraction team consisting of Sombra, Widowmaker, and Reaper to break Doctrine out of captivity and bring him back into Talon’s fold. That same prison setting will arrive in the rotation as a playable Escort map when Season 5 launches.

Sombra Shifts to Support With Hacking and Healing Abilities

Her reworked kit retains her core stealth and hacking identity while adding direct healing capabilities for teammates. Her Machine Pistol remains her primary short-range weapon, but her Hotfix ability now heals allies over time while briefly hacking health packs and enemy deployables. Sombra’s kit also includes Cyberspace, a projectile that explodes on impact to create a zone that weakens enemies and heals allies. Her classic Translocator allows her to throw a beacon, teleport, and enter a brief period of stealth, while her EMP deals percentage-based damage, hacks nearby enemies, and destroys barriers. New passive perks further support her shift, including Life Hack, which applies Hotfix to nearby allies when EMP is used, and Cybersecurity, which doubles Cyberspace healing for targets below half health.

Roadhog Receives Defensive Rework With Projectile Absorption

Roadhog is receiving a major Tank rework designed to give him defensive tools that protect teammates rather than solely focusing on solo eliminations. While he retains his short-range Scrap Gun and his signature Chain Hook, Blizzard is adding Trash Compactor, an ability that absorbs enemy projectiles and compresses them into an explosive ball of scrap. His survival tool, Take a Breather, now features expanded utility through perks like Hogdrogen Exposure, which allows the ability to heal nearby allies, and Toxic Exhaust, which slows and damages enemies standing directly in front of him during use. Other additions include Bruiser, which grants critical hit resistance and increased movement speed when Roadhog falls below half health, giving the character more frontline presence.
