by Lisa Park - Tech Editor

Overwatch is experiencing a significant resurgence in popularity, achieving its highest player counts in over a year across all platforms coinciding with the official launch of Season 1. The game has seen a strong return of players following last week’s major reveal, which confirmed the dropping of the “2” from the sequel’s title, the addition of a roster of new heroes, and the introduction of a year-long, interconnected narrative.

The early access release of the new hero, Illari, also contributed to the influx of players. Blizzard responded quickly to community feedback regarding the English voice actress’s performance, implementing adjustments to the character’s design.

As reported earlier this week, Overwatch recorded a particularly strong weekend on Steam, achieving its highest player count since launching on the platform. The positive momentum continued with the release of the Season 1 update on .

Season 1: A New Era for Overwatch

Season 1 introduces five new heroes at launch, with five more planned throughout 2026 – one per season. These include:

  • Vadera (Armor): A long-range armor hero focused on area control, and the vice president of Vishkar Corporation.
  • Emre (Damage): A fast-paced damage hero utilizing cybernetic upgrades and mobile combat.
  • Mizuki (Support): A versatile support hero belonging to the Hashimoto clan.
  • Anran (Damage): A flanker damage hero who controls fire, recruited into Overwatch, and the older sister of Weiyan.
  • Jetpack Cat (Support): A perpetually flying cat providing tactical support with quick reflexes and the ability to pull allies.

Beyond the new heroes, Season 1 introduces “The Reign of Talon,” a fully interconnected story unfolding over the course of a year, following the rise of the Talon organization under new leadership. This narrative will be delivered through a new cinematic trailer, animated short stories, hero spotlights, and short stories.

A five-week, faction-based event called “Conquest Meta” allows players to choose to align with either Overwatch or Talon, completing missions and earning rewards.

Significant gameplay and ranking system updates are also included. These encompass new sub-roles with unique passive abilities for all heroes, a reset for competitive play with rewards and rare titles, updates to the Stadium mode, a complete overhaul of the user interface and experience, and new systems like Praise.

A collaboration between Overwatch and Hello Kitty and Friends is currently available until , offering skins inspired by Hello Kitty and Friends characters, along with cosmetic items like nameplates, stickers, and emotes. The collaboration includes skins for Juno as Hello Kitty, Widowmaker as Kuromi, Mercy as Pompompurrin, Lucio as Keroppi, D.Va as My Melody, and Kiriko as Cinnamoroll.

The season also features faction-inspired skins, new bundles, a Mythic skin for Mercy titled Celestial Guardian, and a new Mythic weapon for Vadera named Star Shooter, alongside a refreshed Loot Box content offering skins from the past six seasons.

Looking ahead, Season 2 will introduce a new hero and additional Mythic items, alongside a celebration of the game’s 10th anniversary later this spring. A new hero will also join the roster in Season 3, slated for this summer, accompanied by the Japan Night map and further Mythic items. Season 4, also planned for later this summer, will add another new hero and feature events tied to BlizzCon and the Overwatch World Cup.

The changes represent a significant revitalization effort for the ten-year-old franchise, as Blizzard navigates a gaming landscape where live-service titles face increasing competition and player retention challenges. The shift back to simply “Overwatch” signals a broader conversation about the future of the universe and its characters, according to Blizzard Entertainment President Johanna Faries.
