Alan McIntyre, principal of Owairoa Primary School, received the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) for services to education during an investiture ceremony, as reported by times.co.nz. Governor-General Dame Cindy Kiro presented the insignia to McIntyre, who has led the school since 1990 and plans to retire at the end of the school year after more than 52 years in primary education.

Owairoa Primary School principal Alan McIntyre received his MNZM insignia from Governor-General Dame Cindy Kiro at an investiture ceremony this week, following his inclusion in the 2026 King’s Birthday Honours List in June. McIntyre, who has spent over 39 years as a principal, referred to his career as a lifelong passion rather than a simple profession in an interview with the Times. The Governor-General’s office noted his extensive contributions to primary education, highlighting his leadership in international student programmes and digital learning initiatives.

Pioneering International Programmes and Digital Learning

The Governor-General’s office stated that McIntyre pioneered international student programmes at the primary level. He implemented an international teaching exchange programme and established a sister-school relationship between Owairoa Primary School and Chaotian Primary School in Guangzhou. McIntyre also represented New Zealand’s education sector in a trilateral school partnership connecting Guangzhou, Los Angeles, and Auckland. He introduced the Digital Dream Lab classroom at Owairoa Primary, providing students with hands-on learning in science and technology through 3D printing, virtual reality headsets, drones, and robotics. His administrative initiatives also include the Super Start programme, which introduces pre-schoolers to the school environment. Alongside his educational career, McIntyre has served as a Justice of the Peace and completed a three-year term as a Manukau City Councillor.

Reflections on Five Decades in Primary Education

Reflecting on his career after learning of the honour earlier this year, McIntyre told the Times that working alongside students, staff, families, and communities has always been a privilege. He believes he is among the longest-serving active school principals in New Zealand, having accumulated over 52 years in primary education.

Throughout my life, teaching has functioned as far more than just a job, serving instead as an enduring devotion and a deep well of meaning and satisfaction. Throughout my journey, my attention has stayed fixed on the individuals I have been honoured to help, rather than the passage of time.

McIntyre emphasized that the recognition reflects the collective efforts of the many individuals who supported his journey. He thanked his family for their ongoing patience and encouragement, alongside the students, staff, board members, mentors, colleagues, and parents who helped build school communities centered on respect, belonging, opportunity, and excellence.

Upcoming Retirement at the End of the School Year

McIntyre recently announced that he will step down from his role as principal of Owairoa Primary School at the conclusion of the current school year. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to watch generations of young New Zealanders grow in confidence, discover their strengths, and achieve their potential.
