Owaisi Predicts Hijab-Wearing Woman Will Become Prime Minister
all India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) President Asaduddin Owaisi stated on January 9, 2026, that he believes a woman wearing a hijab will one day become Prime Minister of India. Owaisi made the remarks while addressing a public meeting in Hyderabad, Telangana.
“I may not be alive to see it, but the day will come when a woman wearing a hijab will become India’s Prime Minister,” Owaisi said, according to The Hindu.
Owaisi’s statement comes amid ongoing debates and legal challenges surrounding the wearing of hijabs in educational institutions and public spaces in India. In February 2022, the Karnataka High Court upheld a ban on hijabs in pre-university colleges, a decision that sparked protests and legal appeals. The Supreme Court of India heard arguments on the case in September 2023,but a final verdict remains pending as of January 10,2026.
The AIMIM has consistently advocated for the rights of Muslim women to practice their faith, including the right to wear the hijab. Owaisi has previously criticized the Karnataka High Court’s ruling and accused the government of targeting Muslim women.
India’s current Prime Minister is Narendra Modi, of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), who assumed office on May 26, 2014. The next general election is scheduled for April-May 2024.
