Owen Farrell England Return: Social Media Cleared
Owen Farrell Focused on Lions’ Momentum, Not Personal Test Prospects
Owen Farrell, the veteran fly-half, is prioritizing the British & Irish Lions’ collective momentum over his own prospects of featuring in the remaining Tests against Australia. Named as the midweek captain, Farrell expressed his commitment to being his authentic self and contributing to the team’s success, regardless of his personal selection for the crucial upcoming matches.
“I think the most important thing is that I come here, be myself and then see where that goes,” Farrell stated, reflecting on his captaincy role for the midweek fixtures. He was chosen ahead of other strong contenders like Wales’ Jac Morgan and England’s Jamie George, a decision that underscores the coaching staff’s trust in his leadership qualities. “And I mean that genuinely. I’m not saying that but don’t mean it. We’ll see what happens.”
The Lions are keen to build on their hard-fought 27-19 victory in the frist Test in Brisbane. Farrell acknowledged the anticipated response from the Wallabies and stressed the importance of the Lions being prepared for an intensified challenge. “Obviously there is going to be a reaction from the weekend,” Farrell commented. “We need to be ready for that and more.”
Those close to Farrell, including his Saracens teammate Jamie George, are confident in his ability to step up when required. George lauded Farrell’s impact on the squad, particularly his influence on the non-Test players. “The better we train as a non-23 team, the better prepared the Test team are going to be and he has driven that massively,” George remarked. ”He’s unbelievably impressive. You don’t play with him for a year and it still takes your breath away.” This sentiment suggests that even if not in the starting lineup for the Tests, Farrell’s presence and leadership are invaluable assets to the Lions’ campaign.
