A couple’s journey through tuberculosis treatment inspires advocacy and change in moldova.
Eighteen years ago, Oxana Rucșineanu’s life changed when she was diagnosed with tuberculosis at age 20. She faced the advanced stages of the illness at the Balti Clinic in northern Moldova.
I was infected with a sick relative. At first I didn’t notice it, but when the first symptoms of illness appeared, I went to the doctor. The tuberculosis was already in an advanced stage: I already had holes in both lung wings,
Rucșineanu saeid, recalling her experiance.
After three years, Rucșineanu recovered with the help of her doctors.
I didn’t want the disease to take my dreams. I was determined to return to life beyond the window of the infirmary,
she said.
Love Found During treatment
Rucșineanu’s tuberculosis was resistant to most antibiotics available in Moldova, leading to a three-year treatment.
I started treatment, but after four months the tests showed that I had to be treated against a multi-resistant form of the disease. Regrettably, there was no medication against these forms of the disease in the Republic of Moldova,
she recalled.
In 2008, new medication became available, and Rucșineanu’s condition improved.
During her treatment, she met Pavel, another tuberculosis patient. They married in 2009 and now have two children.
Despite the challenges we were confronted with, we have never given up. I want our victory over tuberculosis to serve everyone affected by the disease,
Rucșineanu said.
From Adversity to Advocacy
In 2010, Rucșineanu and Pavel founded the Moldovian Association of Tuberculosis Patients, a non-governmental organization that advocates for patients’ rights and provides information and support.
Treatment for tuberculosis has evolved.Modern advancements have shortened diagnoses and treatments. unlike Rucșineanu’s long course of treatment with injections, patients now undergo shorter treatments without injections.
We are committed to ensuring that tuberculosis patients in the Republic of Moldova have access to the necessary diagnosis and treatment offers and have a chance of survival,
Rucșineanu said.
Rucșineanu collaborates with the national program to combat tuberculosis and is a member of the coordination council of national programs for prevention and combating tuberculosis and HIV.
Progress in Tuberculosis Treatment
Moldova has introduced shorter treatment schemes with new medication against drug-resistant tuberculosis. The government is updating protocols and using short treatments based on World Health Organization recommendations. Innovative methods are used to diagnose tuberculosis.
Dr. Petru Alexandriuc, a specialist in phthisiology and pneumology who treated Rucșineanu and Pavel, praised these efforts.
The new treatment methods are much more useful and effective, not only because they enable faster healing by shortening a two-year treatment to nine months, but also because they help those affected to integrate back into society faster,
Alexandriuc said.
Rucșineanu and Pavel provide emotional support to patients at the Balti Hospital, emphasizing that tuberculosis is curable.
Everyone can develop tuberculosis, not only socially weak who live under precarious conditions, how many believe. But this disease can and must be healed,
Rucșineanu added.
Investments Crucial for Ending Tuberculosis
Rucșineanu collaborates with international organizations to share experiences regarding tuberculosis treatment.
Moldova has a high prevalence of tuberculosis in the WHO European region. In 2024, there were 66.3 primary and recurrence cases per 100,000 inhabitants (1,935 cases) and 23.2 cases per 100,000 children (146 cases).
The European region faces a meaningful tuberculosis burden, with an estimated 225,000 people affected in 2023 and 16,000 deaths. Drug-resistant tuberculosis is also a major concern.
