A new Italian study suggests that exposure to higher levels of ground-level ozone may significantly increase the risk of children and adolescents developing pediatric-onset multiple sclerosis (MS).

The research, titled Ozone pollution as a possible trigger for multiple sclerosis in young people: the PEDIGREE study and published in the Journal of Neurology, indicates a correlation between air pollution and the onset of the autoimmune disease during critical years of childhood development.

Findings on Ozone Exposure and MS Risk

Researchers found that for every unit increase in ozone levels during the three years preceding the first appearance of MS symptoms, the likelihood of a child or adolescent developing the disease rose by approximately 10%.

Ground-level ozone is a common air pollutant, and the study suggests it could act as a key environmental trigger for the condition in youth.

Public Health Implications

The study authors noted that as global ozone levels continue to trend upward, implementing strategies to reduce ozone exposure in youth could become a vital public health strategy for the prevention of MS.

Researchers, PEDIGREE study

These findings contribute to a broader body of evidence linking environmental pollutants to the development of multiple sclerosis. Previous research has already established links between air pollution and an increased risk of MS in adult populations.

While the exact causes of multiple sclerosis are still being untangled by researchers, the role of environmental factors is a significant area of study. Ozone is identified as an air pollutant that may play a role in the pathoetiology of the disease.

Other research into pediatric-onset MS (POMS) has explored gene-environment interactions. For instance, the CD86 gene has been identified as the only non-HLA gene associated with POMS for which expression may interact with environmental factors like ozone pollution to increase risk.

The PEDIGREE study specifically highlights the window of vulnerability in children and teens, suggesting that the impact of ozone is particularly relevant during the developmental stages of youth.
