Pablo Cruz Guerrero Takes on Comedy Icon Chespirito in New max Series

Pablo Cruz Guerrero,an actor who didn’t grow up watching the iconic sitcoms of Roberto Gómez Bolaños,known as “Chespirito,” now embodies the late comedian in “Chespirito: Not Really on Purpose.” The new bioseries streams on max, with episodes released weekly.

Gómez Bolaños’ family-friendly programs, including “El Chavo del Ocho” and “The Colorado Chapulín,” once reached over 300 million viewers worldwide. His influence remains strong in Latin America and among U.S. diasporic communities.
Cruz Guerrero,41,believes his lack of childhood nostalgia for Chespirito’s brand of physical comedy and social commentary gave him an advantage during auditions. “I want to convince myself that this was the one thing that allowed me to gain objectivity about the story,” he said during a video call from Mexico City. “had I been a fan, I would have been ridden with nerves when approaching the character.”
casting director Isabel Cortázar recognized Cruz Guerrero’s potential and invited him to audition in mid-2023. “Before receiving her call, I would have never seen myself as Chespirito,” Cruz Guerrero said. ”No one had ever told me before that I looked like him.”
Cruz Guerrero has an extensive acting background, with roles in films such as “The Student” and “From Prada to Nada,” as well as television. He recently played a role in the Netflix series “Luis Miguel: The Series.”
He speculates that his parents’ time living in Los Angeles before his birth led them to expose him to culture outside of Mexico, such as cinema, concerts, and museum exhibits, rather than Chespirito’s shows.
Cruz Guerrero noted that he experienced a “social and comedic disadvantage” in middle school as he didn’t know Chespirito’s jokes like his peers. To prepare for the role, he immersed himself in Chespirito content online.
