Revving Up Berlin‘s Art Scene: A New Gallery Space in a Retrofitted Gas Station
This spring, Berlin’s vibrant art scene is set to welcome a unique addition as Pace Gallery and Galerie Judin team up to transform a 1950s gas station into a thriving cultural hub in Schöneberg. Set to open on May 1, the restored space will house galleries, offices, a café, and a bookshop operated by publishing group Die Zeit.
Kicking off Gallery Weekend Berlin, the new space will debut with a group exhibition jointly presented by Pace and Galerie Judin. This collaborative spirit will continue throughout the year, with Pace hosting two exhibitions annually and Galerie Judin helming three.
The gas station, originally built in 1954 as part of West Berlin’s postwar reconstruction, was abandoned in 1986. It was Juerg Judin, founder of Galerie Judin, who saw potential in the forgotten structure and purchased it in 2005. Under the watchful eye of architect Thomas Brakel, the building was meticulously renovated, preserving its modernist charm. transient home to a George Grosz museum from 2022 to 2024.
Pace Gallery, with eight global locations, established its Berlin office this year under the direction of senior director Laura Attanasio, becoming the first mega-gallery to put down roots in the German capital. "Pace is deeply committed to Berlin and its creative community," Attanasio says. "We’re excited to present our artists’ work in this special building and strengthen our connection to the city and its artists."
