Pacers Steal Game 1 of NBA Finals from Thunder
oklahoma City—the Indiana Pacers, fueled by a resilient comeback, stunned the Oklahoma City Thunder 111-110 in Game 1 of the NBA Finals. Tyrese Haliburton’s clutch jumper with just 0.3 seconds remaining sealed the victory, giving Indiana an early lead in the series and home-court advantage.
The Thunder, who dominated much of the game and forced a staggering 25 turnovers, appeared poised to cruise to a win. Oklahoma City’s defense, which led the league in forced turnovers during the regular season, stifled the Pacers’ usually efficient offense for three quarters. However,Indiana demonstrated their ability to thrive under pressure, erasing a 15-point deficit in the fourth quarter.
Despite the numerous turnovers, the Pacers remained within striking distance, trailing by only 12 at halftime. This resilience allowed them to capitalize when the thunder faltered down the stretch. The pacers’ comeback marks their fifth from down 15 or more points in these playoffs.
Haliburton, despite a relatively quiet night, delivered when it mattered moast. His game-winning shot capped a 14-point performance, adding six assists to his stat line. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led the Thunder with 38 points, but his 14-of-30 shooting performance fell short of his usual efficiency.
“I don’t know. I don’t know. I think we’re just a really resilient group,” Haliburton said, reflecting on the pacers’ comeback ability. “We do just a great job of sticking in and just settling into the game.”
Lu Dort contributed 15 points for the Thunder, hitting five of seven 3-pointers. Andrew Nembhard played a key role in the Pacers’ comeback, scoring eight of his 14 points in the fourth quarter and defending Gilgeous-Alexander effectively.
“he made plays at both ends,” Pacers head coach Rick carlisle said of Nembhard. “The one stop on Shai at the end was a big play, and then we got the rebound. There was (his) step-back three, which was a big momentum play. I think it went from six to three.”
The loss marks a missed prospect for the Thunder, who had been dominant when forcing turnovers this season. Gilgeous-Alexander emphasized the need to improve moving forward.
“We just got to focus on being better,” gilgeous-Alexander said. “The series isn’t first to one, it’s first to four.We have four more games to get, they have three. That’s just where we are. We got to understand that, and we got to get to four before they get to three, if we want to win the NBA championship. It’s that simple. We lost Game 1.We have to be better.”
What’s next
The Thunder will look to rebound in Game 2 and even the series before heading to Indiana. The Pacers, meanwhile, will aim to build on their momentum and take a commanding lead.
