Tsunami Alert Lifted for Hawaii and Mexico After Powerful Russian Earthquake; Galapagos Sees waves

A massive 8.8 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula triggered tsunami alerts across the Pacific, but by Wednesday, Mexico and Hawaii had lifted their warnings, while Easter Island reported no damage.
No Damage to Easter Island
on Wednesday, the director of chile’s National Disaster Response Agency confirmed that Easter Island experienced no damage following the powerful earthquake. While the country remained on maximum alert for potential tsunamis, Alicia Cebrián, director of Senapred, stated, “We have no reports of affectation, either people or on the coastal edge, and we are already monitoring, but so far we have no reports of damage to infrastructure or people, because all the people correctly evacuated.”
Hawaii Lifts Tsunami Advisory
The tsunami alert for all Hawaiian Islands was officially ended at 8:58 AM local time, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.The center reported that wave heights across the state were below recommended levels and continuing to decrease. However, they cautioned that “Small changes at sea level and strong or unusual currents coudl persist for several more hours in some coastal areas.” The most significant tsunami waves caused by the 8.8 magnitude earthquake near Russia reached 1.7 meters in the Hawaiian Islands.
Mexico Cancels Tsunami Alert
The Mexican government announced on Wednesday the cancellation of the tsunami alert that had been issued the previous night. This decision came after an evaluation of sea levels along the Mexican coast and areas near the epicenter. The Secretary of the Navy, through the Tsunami Alert Center, stated that significant variations affecting the population or maritime-port activities were not expected. The alert was initially issued following the 8.8 magnitude earthquake that struck off the southern coast of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula.
galapagos Islands Experience Tsunami Waves
tsunami waves began to impact the Galapagos Islands, ecuador, on Wednesday afternoon. Data from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center indicated that Baltra and Santa Cruz islands recorded wave heights of 1.04 meters and 0.4 meters, respectively.
