Packers’ Policy on LaFleur, Gutekunst: Contract Talks Loom

GREEN BAY, Wis. — As Ed Policy prepares to take over as president/CEO of the Green Bay Packers, the future of head coach Matt LaFleur and general manager Brian gutekunst is in focus. While Policy isn’t rushing to offer contract extensions, his philosophy suggests that both should receive new deals before entering the final year of their current agreements.
LaFleur and Gutekunst, who signed extensions in 2022, each have two years remaining on their contracts. Policy, who will succeed the retiring Mark Murphy on July 25, acknowledged the situation. russ Ball, executive vice president/director of football operations, also reports to the team president.
“All three of them [are] under multi-year contracts,” Policy said. “None of them are up at the end of this year. We won’t be doing anything going into this season.”
Policy, son of former San Francisco 49ers and Cleveland Browns president Carmen Policy, has been with the Packers as 2012, most recently as chief operating officer. He will head the Packers’ seven-member executive committee.
In an interview, Policy addressed the contract status of LaFleur and Gutekunst, emphasizing his general aversion to “lame-duck” scenarios.
“I’m generally opposed — I’d never say never — [but] I’m generally opposed to a coach or GM going into the last year of their contract,” Policy said. “That creates a lot of issues. I think normally you have a pretty good idea of where that relationship is going when you have two years left — not always, but normally.”
As Jordan Love took over as quarterback, the Packers have made the playoffs the past two seasons, securing one postseason victory. Gutekunst has served as general manager since 2018, with LaFleur joining as head coach a year later.
Policy outlined his priorities as winning football games, keeping the Packers in Green Bay, and strengthening the community.
“We’ll do whatever it takes to win football games,” Policy said. “If that means changing the structure, then we’ll change the structure…We’ll do whatever is best for the Packers.”
Policy intends to increase formal meetings with football leadership to improve dialog between Ball, Gutekunst, and LaFleur.
“I see the president’s role as it relates to football operations as realy selecting football leadership, guiding them and giving them all the resources thay need — and supporting them, evaluating them, and then ultimately holding them accountable,” Policy said.
Under Gutekunst’s leadership, the Packers boast a 73-42-1 record, ranking fourth in the NFL for winning percentage. lafleur holds a 67-33 record, with five playoff appearances.
